Every year, we look forward to attending the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, and 2026 has been no exception. There’s something truly special about being surrounded by people who care as deeply about children’s books and illustration as we do. For us at Luddington Creative, Bologna isn’t just an event; it’s where ideas spark, relationships grow, and creative careers take shape.
From the moment we arrived, the energy was unmistakable. The halls were filled with publishers, agents, illustrators, and storytellers from across the globe, all bringing their own perspectives and passions. It’s a reminder of just how international and collaborative this industry really is.
Meeting Artists, Old and New
One of the highlights for us is always connecting with illustrators. Whether we’re catching up with artists we already represent or meeting new talent for the first time, Bologna gives us the chance to have meaningful, face-to-face conversations.
This year, our portfolio reviews were a real standout moment. Sitting down with emerging illustrators, hearing about their journeys, and offering guidance is something we genuinely value. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone’s work in person and talking through their ideas, it’s often where the first steps of a future collaboration begin.
Advocating for Our Artists
A big part of our time at the fair is spent in meetings with publishers from around the world. These conversations are where we champion our artists, sharing their work, discussing projects, and exploring new opportunities.
We see ourselves as a bridge between illustrators and the publishing industry. At Bologna, that role becomes especially tangible. Every meeting is a chance to find the right home for a particular style, voice, or story.
Staying Inspired
Beyond the meetings, Bologna is a constant source of inspiration. Walking through exhibitions, discovering new illustration trends, and seeing the incredible diversity of styles on display reminds us why we do what we do.
The Illustrators Exhibition in particular is always a highlight, showcasing just how innovative and boundary-pushing contemporary illustration has become. It pushes us to keep evolving and to continue supporting artists who bring something unique to the table.
Why Bologna Matters to Us
In a world where so much can happen online, there’s still no substitute for being there in person. Bologna is where connections feel real and immediate. It’s where a quick introduction can turn into a long-term partnership, and where creative conversations flow naturally.
For us, it’s also about being present for our artists, making sure their work is seen, their voices are heard, and their careers are moving forward.
Looking Ahead
As we wrap up another inspiring year at the fair, we’re leaving Bologna feeling energised and optimistic. We’ve met incredible talent, had exciting conversations with publishers, and opened doors to new possibilities.
Most importantly, we’re reminded that at the heart of everything we do is storytelling, and the illustrators who bring those stories to life. We can’t wait to see where these new connections lead.
And for any clients on that BA flight who had their luggage delayed by days, have you got it back yet? We are still waiting!
